ARTHUR BERRY- Born 1925 Studied at the Royal College of Art and at the Burslem School of Art 1943-1946. Associated with Colquhoun and MacBryde in his earlier years. Taught at the Manchester College of Art. He Lecturered in Painting at the North Staffordshire Polytechnic and at the Chelsea College of Art. Has exhibited widely at galleries including the Stoke on Trent City Museum and Art Gallery and the Crane Kalman Gallery.
In 1976 he met Peter Cheesman Director of the Victoria Theatre: since then he has written various plays. During 1976 BBC's OMNIBUS broadcasted a major feature on him. In 1985 Central Television released a documentary devoted to his work. He was the subject of a further TV Programme during 1988. He draws and paints in a highly subjective heavily worked expressive manner. Born in Smallthorne, his his experience of the half urban half rural way of life is at the root of all his work.
