This small but significant collection of etchings from the turn of the 20th century represents a great era in the art of etchings. Works created at this time by artists of this period elevated an art form which had become the poor relation of paint to near technical perfection. The prints they produced caught the public imagination. The collecting of prints became fashionable amongst aesthetes and speculators alike.
After World War II the popularity of prints started to wane. They couldn't compete against the large abstract canvases of the post-war avant garde. |
It seemed that the comparatively small monochrome images were part of a bygone age, which indeed they were. The great masters, once household names, lapsed into obscurity.
Recently there has been an etching revival and their worth again valued. The concept of printmaking as an art and not just as a form of reproduction is evident in this vivid collection from various artists. |
