LEONARD EVETTS was born in Newport, Monmouthshire. At the age of 18 he won a scholarship to the Royal College of Art. He then taught at the Edinburgh College of Art from 1933-37. He established himself as an authority in ancient calligraphy after publishing his book 'Roman Lettering'. From 1937 he taught at Kings College, Newcastle in the department of fine art. He remained there for the next 40 years, where he became the head of department. He completed over 300 stained glass windows in Britain and abroad, including the east window at Newcastle Cathedral Church of St. Nicholas. The Church of England acknowledged his work in 1995 with a Lambeth doctorate. His work has been shown at the RA. Laing Art Gallery, Newcastle. Hatton Gallery, Newcastle held a large exhibition in 2001. He was married to the artist Phyl Dobson, with whom he occasionally showed.
