William Freeman photo

WILLIAM FREEMAN, born in Norwich 1853, attended the South Kensington Art School (which later became the Royal College of Art) and won a prize from Lord Leighton. He painted in the same circle as John Sell Cotman. He exhibited at the Thames Valley Art Club but made little effort to sell his work. He became an eccentric figure with long hair, his trousers tied up with bootlace whilst riding about on an old tricycle in a rather wild manner. His behavior and shyness prevented him from achieving the publicity or popularity that his talent deserved. In later years he almost entirely confined himself to painting with watercolours. He had a great command of technique with Blakesque qualities of vision. His themes consisted mainly of views of his beloved Thames and of London streets. They follow an English romantic tradition, influenced by romantic literature. His work is inhabited by wraith like figures that seem to be forever searching. Many of his pictures show a single figure looking out to sea or across a darkened landscape.
