WILLIAM GEAR is one in a long series of Scottish artists who worked away from Scotland, but did not separate themselves from their Scottish background. William, Allan Davie and Edoardo Paolozzi are artists with whom he could be compared. Trained at Edinburgh College of Art, he followed the established tradition among Edinburgh painters of moving to Paris where he studied with Fernand Leger.  Although the war interrupted this experience, he was determined to renew the connection and returned to Paris in 1947 after being demobbed. During the war he continued to work whenever he found the opportunity and he even exhibited in Italy in 1944 and in Hamburg in 1947.
