WILLIAM JOHNSTONE was born in Denholm, Roxbroughshire into a farming family. He attended Edinburgh College of Art, 1919-23. He then taught there for two years. He won a traveling scholarship in1925 and studied in Paris with André Lahote at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière and the Atelier Colarossi. He married the American sculptor Flora Macdonald in 1927 and spent the next couple of years moving between America and Scotland, finally settling in London in 1931. He had his first one man show at the Wertheim Gallery in 1935. He was an influential principal at Camberwell School of Arts (1938-46) and the Central School of Arts and Crafts (1947-60). He retired in 1960 to be a full-time sheep farmer. His later work was influenced by Oriental calligraphy, as seen in his 1980 show in the Hayward Gallery. He was given a centenary show at the Talbot Rice Gallery, University of Edinburgh in 1997.
