EMMANUEL LEVY, Born in Manchester 1900, studied in Paris and at the Manchester School of Art. It is here that he met L. S. Lowry, under Adolphe Valette, whome he was to later suceed as art master at Manchester University department of architecture.
He Lectured at Manchester and Stockport College of Art during the 1950's and 1960's. He also worked for a while as an art critic at the Manchester Evening News.
His first exhibition was at Manchester City Gallery in 1924. There are two of his works hanging at the National Portrait Gallery. There is a powerful feeling of directness in his portraits exemplified in his drawing of Lowry at the Salford art gallery. It was during the 1970's that he created a series of 12 large paintings entitled "The Chessmen", which is now in a private collection in Germany. This was to symobolise the complexity and confusion of our time.
