PAUL NIETSCHE was born into a large family in Kiev. He studied at the Imperial Art Academy in Odessa and the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. He then moved to Paris, where he became friends with sculptor Auguste Rodin. He exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1912 before going back to Russia during World War 1. He then moved to Berlin. Always on the move, he devided his time between his studio in Berlin and Yugoslavia and Belfast. He showed at the Ulster Art Club (1926) and at the Royal Hibernian Academy (1930). During the 1930s, he combined his work in Belfast with painting trips to Berlin, the South of France, Cornwall, New York and London, managing to exhibit and sell his paintings as he went. He had two solo shows at the Magee Gallery in Belfast (1936, 1939) where, he finally settled down, exhibiting at venues like Tyrone House and 55a Donegall Place during the late 1940s.
