JOHN POWELL was born in Nottingham. He studied for 6 years as an aprentist lithographic artist but left to study at Nottingham College of Art (1932-5) and the Royal College of Art (1935-9), under Gilbert Spencer. He tought at Sutton and Cheam School of Art, then at Manchester Regional College of Art, Nottingham as head of department and Portsmouth College of Art as principal. His exhibitions include, RA, Victoria and Albert Museum, Whitechapel Art Gallery, National Maritime Museum in Greenwich and the Archer Gallery. He had solo shows at New Ashgate Gallery, Farnham in 1981 and Bosham Walk Art Gallery, Bosham in 1990. Examples of his work are held at Bristol Education Authority and Manchester Education Authority. He lived in Fishborne, Sussex.
