John Whitfield Taylor started as a cartoonist in the late 1920's. He was a schoolmaster and taught at Portland House School as head of the art department.
As a student at Manchester University he was the arts editor of the student magazine the Rag. "It was my job to choose the funny cartoons," Taylor said, "and naturally, I felt a certain bias towards my own work."
His work has been praised by his contemporaries. Bernard Hollowood (Hod), said, "I collect genuine Taylors as a connoisseur. His captions are slick and economical. The disarmingly simple brush lines of his drawings match the captions in clarity and vitality."
