BRIAN RICE has always been fascinated by the primitive marks that early man made on his environment as a record of his presence. He has also been interested in medieval symbols and heraldry, as well as in more contemporary emblems-flags, street signs, advertising logos. Throughout a long and distinguished career his work has presented a personal synthesis of his lifestyle and his many interests. Later, the organic spheres and rectangles give way to hard-edged, full frontal circles and barred lines, suggesting street signs and billboards. Rice achieved considerable success as a young painter and printmaker on the ‘Pop’ scene, with solo exhibitions at the New Vision Gallery. This urban imagery and the influence of contemporary American painters led to a series of ‘target’ paintings which he assembled into large optically vibrating structures.(Taken from catalogue of Messum exhibition 2001 by Jenny Pery)
