HERMON SHAPIRO studied at Camberwell School of Arts between 1946-1954 where he was influenced by Bloch, Minton and Vaughan. From 1956 he taught at various schools, including Cardiff College of Art. He took part in many exhibitions including Young Welsh Artists (1959), The Royal Cambrian Academy of Art, Royal West of England Academy, Contemporary Arts Society for Wales, Piccadilly Gallery London and the Howard Roberts Gallery Cardiff. His work can also be found in permanent collections in the Welsh Arts Council, National Museum of Wales, and private collections in the UK and Europe. Shapiro worked in various media and seems to be particuarly interested in modern materials. Much of his work is produced on paper, in oil combined with various fillers and fixatives. He uses these materials to produce works of intense colour and very interesting surfaces. These are described here as mixed media.
