LAURIE STEWART, (aka de Swarte) painter in oil, watercolour, pastel and more recently photography. Born in Stepney Green, East London, 15th April 1926. Educated in West Norwood and various elementary schools. Studied at Sir John Cass, Toynbee and St Martins (under Bainbridge Copnall, Paul Drury and Kenneth Martin). Exhibitions include Free Painters Society, Mount Street Gallery, Hamlet Gallery, Plus Ultra Gallery, New York and Laurie Stewart Fine Art Gallery. Works in many private collections. Says “ Art is more of an influence with him than nature” Signs work “LS” , “L. Stewart” or “de Swarte”. . De Swarte insists that nature as such took little or no place in this thinking. His work was derived in Art and "his colours from the palette”  Painters since the renaissance have been almost obsessed with the concept of space on  the canvas and this painting shows some of those concerns in the artists work.
