Gabriel White Painting

GABRIEL WHITE was born in Rome. His parents then settled for a time in Switzerland and White did not see England until  he was nine; he was then educated at Downside and Oxford University. Worked as a tutor to support himself as an art student under Meninsky at Westminster School of Art, 1927-30 then , studied under Frederick Porter at Central School of Arts and Crafts, 1928-9. At Westminster White met the artist  Edward Ardizzone, a lifelong friend, and his sister became White's first wife. White was assistant director of art at Arts Council, 1945-58 becoming director in the latter year. In the 1950s White had learned etching under Anthony Gross at Slade School : of Fine Art, so that when he retired from the Arts Council in 1970 he continued as a full-time artist, and in 1976 published a book about Ardizzone. Showed LG Gallery Mayor Gallery and Sally Hunter Fine Art, who  gave a memorial  show of his etchings in 1989. Lived in London.
