BIAN WILLSHER was born in London 1930. Willsher is entirely self-taught in art. He studied engineering at Woolwich Polytechnic then drifted through a succession of occupations. His passion for motorbike racing meant spending six months with his left wrist in plaster in 1954 after crashing while practising for a race at Brands Hatch. This break from work gave him the opportunity to experiment with plaster, making a series of ornaments. In 1956 he visited Guernsey, a trip that had an enormous influence on his life. While there he decided to pursue his own creative interests. On returning he began to make salad bowls and table lamps which he sold to Heals and Liberties. He bought a band saw to "doodle" with off-cuts of wood which developed in to his sculptural work. He still sees his sculptures today as "doodling three-dimensionally". He has had work in the Tate Britain and several one-man shows.
